To celebrate the 20th anniversary of A. I. Herzen RSPU College of Music The First International B. T. Shtokolov Vocal Competition took place which proved a significant event in the music life of St. Petersburg and a considerable contribution to Russian vocal performance culture. The competition started a new cultural tradition and helped to find talented young musicians. 165 participants from various educational institutions and music theatres represented Russia, China, Germany, Belarus, the Ukraine and Moldova. The Opening ceremony took place on November 30, 2008 in the beautiful white hall of Sheremetiev Palace, where jurors and Mariinsky Theatre soloists performed for the participants and guests. The Final ceremony with the Prize-winners Gala took place on December 6, 2008 in the famous M. I. Glinka Hall of the D. D. Shostakovich State Philharmonic Society
